Using innovative technology to improve ED throughput and communication among care teams to facilitate timely patient admissions
Everyone agrees that care team communication and collaboration are essential to delivering excellent patient-centered care.

Yet communication failures occur far too often in clinical settings. The challenge is to communicate timely information to the right provider at the right time through the right device, all while being HIPAA compliant.

In February 2021, a workflow improvement project was kicked off in the ED using Spok Go as the primary communication tool for the care team to coordinate patient admissions. Qualitative and quantitative data was collected pre- and post-implementation. A reduction of 38 minutes was observed in Disposition to Admit time (“boarding time” in the ED), along with a 27 minute reduction in overall LOS. Other results are pending but early reports indicate an overall improvement in communication among the care team leading to better collegial relationship between the ED providers and the hospitalists.

You'll learn how to:

  • Identify the consequences of communication failures in healthcare.
  • Describe the barriers to effective communication and collaboration that exist in hospitals today.
  • Illustrate how the workflow improvement project implemented at TidalHealth using Spok Go tools led to repairing the relationship between the ED and Hospitalists with decreased wait times for patients.
